Aside from his 1960 soundtrack album G.I. Blues, which reached number one on the Billboard pop albums chart and the UK Albums Chart, and his 1962 single "Return to Sender," which topped the Christmas charts, Elvis Presley's star had begun to dull in the '60s as his singles, bar a few exceptions, starting sliding down the charts. By 1967, Paramount producer Hall Wallis – who presided over Elvis Presley's film career – had cancelled his contract. But there was life in the old hound dog yet. In October 1967, Elvis Presley's notorious manager Colonel Tom Parker presented the idea of a Christmas television special to NBC that eventually morphed into what became known as the legendary '68 Comeback Special, which was broadcast on the channel on December 3, 1968 and largely helped to resuscitate Elvis Presley's career. The live performance, his first following a seven-year period of film work, saw Elvis tear through a dossier of classic tunes. In 2022, filmmaker Steve Binder re-visited the special for a new documentary that featured a medley of these, from "Blue Suede Shoes" to "Hound Dog."
