In 1971, British blues-rock band Free were at a crossroads. The previous year, they’d achieved widespread commercial success with their third album Fire and Water and its lead single "All Right Now". Their next album Highway, released later that same year, had failed to make much of an impression in the charts. Facing the prospect of fading into obscurity as a one-hit-wonder, relationships between band members grew tense. Returning to the studio at the start of the year, they managed to record "My Brother Jake", a breezy, easy-going blues number about advising a friend to change his hard-partying ways (bassist and co-writer Andy Fraser would later reveal that the friend in question was actually Jamaican reggae singer Horace Faith). The song was a surprise chart success, reaching Number 4 in the UK Singles Chart in 1971 and remaining in the chart for 11 weeks. Though Free would briefly split up that year, they reunited in 1972, buoyed in part by the song’s unexpected success.
