By 1996, American singer and songwriter Johnnie Taylor had already enjoyed a long and successful career, with many highly acclaimed albums and singles that captured the public consciousness. When it came time to record a new album in the mid-1990s, he enlisted the help of the duo of Tommy Couch and Wolf Stephenson, and released the album Good Love! Among a collection of bluesy, funk-influenced songs, “Last Two Dollars” hit a particular cord with listeners. A song about being down on your luck while holding on to the last vestiges of hope (the titular last two dollars), the song harkens back to Johnnie Taylor’s early releases on the Stax and Columbia labels.
