Commonly regarded as the "best-known blues song of the 1980s, "Down Home Blues" was first recorded and popularized by Texas musician Z. Z. Hill, who included it in his second album for the Malaco label, Down Home (1982). Written by Malaco's in-house songwriter George Jackson, the track is often credited with revitalizing both Z. Z. Hill's career and the popularity of blues music at large. Apart from featuring some of his finest, smoothest guitar work, this laid-back, slow-burning jam also proved hugely successful on the US charts, spending months on end on the R&B Top 10. In the years that followed, "Down Home Blues" became not just a blues standard but also the best-selling blues single of the 20th century. Thanks to the popularity of "Down Home Blues" and "Cheating in the Next Room," Down Home reached Number 209 on the Billboard 200 and stayed on the soul albums chart for almost two years. The modern-day blues anthem would later be covered by labelmate Denise LaSalle.
