In 2006, the stakes were high for Massachusetts metalcore act Killswitch Engage. After breaking into the mainstream with their third full-length The End of Heartache (2004), the band was ready to begin working on a follow-up that would live up to its predecessor, both critically and commercially. Recorded in just three months, As Daylight Dies was officially released on November 21, 2006, and quickly became one of their most successful albums, peaking at Number 32 on the Billboard 200 chart and receiving Platinum certification in the United States. This was largely thanks to the popularity of its brutal lead single "My Curse," which debuted at Number 21 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart upon its release in late 2006. Written by band members Mike D'Antonio, Adam Dutkiewicz, Justin Foley, Howard Jones, and Joel Stroetzel, "My Curse" documents the narrator's struggles to overcome the end of a past romantic relationship. It was also featured in the video games Burnout Dominator, Burnout Paradise, Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, and Sleeping Dogs.
