Metalcore outfit Killswitch Engage formed from the ashes of Overcast and Aftershock in Massachusetts in 1999 and entered the arena with their debut self-titled album the following year. Second studio album Alive or Just Breathing arrived in 2002 but they hit their stride on their third album,The End of Heartache, which landed in 2004, won Best Album at the 2004 Metal Hammer Golden Gods Awards and yielded one of the most iconic tracks in their repertoire in the form of the sludgy title track. The song, which gets to grips with pain in just under five minutes of smoldering, grimy rock, was nominated for Best Metal Performance at the 47th Annual Grammy Awards and remains one of the band's most talked-about tracks to date. As well as giving Killswitch Engage their breakout single, the song enjoyed its filmic moment in the spotlight when it was used as the theme song for the 2004 zombie action film Resident Evil: Apocalypse.
