Genre-mashing US group Lake Street Dive was conceived at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston originally under the guise of "a free country band". Their debut studio album, In This Episode... came out in 2007, and was met the following year with Promises, Promises in 2008. By their third, self-titled album of 2010, they had perfected their pop-jazz sound and were on their way to becoming a household name in adult contemporary. "You Go Down Smooth" was featured on their fourth studio album Bad Self Portraits, where jazz-powered basslines reign supreme. "Would it be true to say that I ordered you / Or is it you that ordered me? / I could say you are the only one I see / But I can't stop at two or three," sings Rachael Price on one of the group's most recognized songs, which band member Mike “McDuck” Olson, who penned the track, explained was written about his relationship with gin and tonic cocktails.
