The song "Silver Bells" was written for the 1951 film,The Lemon Drop Kid, starring Bob Hope and Marilyn Maxwell. Songwriters Jay Livingston and Ray Evans were reluctant to try to write a Christmas song because so few ever became hits but they gave it a try. The song describes wintry holiday scenes on city streets, mentioning the sounds of bells ringing from department store Santas and Salvation Army volunteers. The song's original title was "Tinkle Bells" but when Livingston discussed the song with his wife, she informed him that he couldn't use tinkle because it was a slang word for urinating. The new title "Silver Bells" was chosen and the rest is history. The song is one of the world's most popular Christmas songs.
