As the first single from their 1983 studio debut Kill 'Em All, Metallica's "Whiplash" made a lasting impression on heavy metal music fans for generations to come. Like most of the band's material, the song was written by lead singer and guitarist James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich and had the peculiarity of being one of the last tracks the band wrote for their first studio album. Named after the medical condition of the same name, caused by a forceful movement of the neck, "Whiplash" is widely regarded as a classic of the thrash metal genre, which combined the instrumental prowess of the new wave of British heavy metal with the brutality of the early 1980s hardcore punk scene. In addition, the song's original release also included alternative studio recordings of "Seek & Destroy" and "Phantom Lord" featuring overdubbed crowd noise.
