Moe Bandy is feeling down on his luck and ready to throw the towel in on this traditional-sounding country ballad, "Cowboys Ain’t Supposed to Cry." Confronting societal pressures through the song's title hook, the honky-tonky hero presciently brings the idea of toxic masculinity to the table. "Oh I am just a cowboy on my way back to Houston / I used to play the rodeos but I can’t play ‘em like I used to," he sings woefully, bemoaning the demise of his career. "I’ve given it up, I’m layin’ it down / I’ve had enough of bein’ a rodeo clown." "Cowboys Ain’t Supposed to Cry" formed the title track of Moe Bandy's fifth album for Columbia, and third LP issued during 1977. The Mississippi-born star had racked up six Top 20 albums in the 1970s—including 1974's It Was Always So Easy (To Find an Unhappy Woman) and 1976's Here I Am Drunk Again—but just missed the mark with this one, settling at number 22.
