O.A.R. (an acronym for Of A Revolution) were formed in 1996 in Rockville, Maryland by lead vocalist and guitarist Marc Roberge, drummer Chris Culos, guitarist Richard On, bassist Benj Gershman and saxophonist/guitarist Jerry DePizzo and dropped their debut album The Wanderer the following year. The band gained widespread popularity among college students everywhere with their nine-track LP, which showcased an easy-going, appealing brand of guitar-led party music. "That Was a Crazy Game of Poker" formed one of the highlights of The Wanderer and grew to become O.A.R.'s signature tune. For this indie-rock anthem, O.A.R. lead singer Marc Roberge drew inspiration from Stephen King's 1978 post-apocalyptic dark fantasy novel The Stand and harnesses the image of playing a poker game with the devil ("Well there's a man sittin' next to me / Red, with smiling eyes") as a metaphor for temptation.
