Since galloping into town with his debut 2013 album, High Top Mountain – poignantly named after a cemetery near Jackson, Kentucky where many of his family are buried – Sturgill Simpson has made a name for himself as a hard-edged neo-outlaw country star whose gravelly storytelling has earned him comparisons to fellow outlaw country mavericks Waylon Jennings and Merle Haggard. For his lofty second album, Metamodern Sounds in Country Music, which was released in 2014 and once again produced by Dave Cobb, Sturgill Simpson paid titular homage to Ray Charles's 1962 album Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music while also nodding to the philosophical and cultural aesthetic of metamodernism. A far cry from his grisly trademark country, "The Promise" is his unlikely cover of the 1987 new wave classic by British '80s band When In Rome, which wound up in the limelight after it was featured in season 2 of hit HBO series The Leftovers.
