The vaudevillian "People Are Strange" was first recorded by American rock band The Doors for their 1967 second studio album Strange Days. According to guitarist Robby Krieger, who wrote the music for the song, frontman Jim Morrison came up with the lyrics while going through a depressive episode. After taking a long walk together along Laurel Canyon, the singer put pen to paper and perfectly captured those feelings of alienation in a song that celebrated misfits and outsiders. Shortly after its commercial release, The Doors' version reached Number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and Number 1 in Canada. Musically, "People Are Strange" combines the band's bohemian blues rock sound with their love for European cabaret music. In the following years, "People Are Strange" was covered by English post-punk band Echo & The Bunnymen, Swedish singer Stina Nordestam, and Canadian roots music ensemble The Dead South, who recorded a bluegrass version of the track for their fourth EP Easy Listening for Jerks Pt. 2 (2021).
