Even though they were only active between 1968 and 1975, LA-based R&B vocal group The Friends of Distinction managed to make their mark on the world of pop music with a few singles that landed in the Top 10 of the US charts. Such is the case of "Love or Let Me Be Lonely," a track taken from their 1970 LP, Real Friends. Written by Skip Scarborough, Jerry Peters, and Anita Poree, "Love or Let Me Be Lonely" is an uplifting R&B track featuring the group's smooth vocal harmonies backed up by a tight rhythm section and muscular string and brass arrangements. Its lyrics are sung from the point of view of a woman who is tired of her partner's tepid attempts at loving and demands a wholehearted effort to make the relationship work. Shortly after its release in March 1970, "Love or Let Me Be Lonely" reached Number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 and Number 9 on the Adult Contemporary chart. In 1982, a cover by country pop singer Paul Davis entered the Hot 100 at Number 40.
