American R&B vocal trio The O' Jays (consisting of Eddie Levert, Walter Williams, and William Powell) dominated the US charts in the 1970s with a string of popular releases for the Philadelphia International label. Albums like Ship Ahoy (1973), Survival (1975), and Family Reunion (1975) all rose to the top of the R&B charts and produced memorable hit singles such as "For the Love of Money," "Give the People What They Want," and "Livin' for the Weekend." In 1978, the group released their twelfth studio LP So Full of Love, which also went to Number 1 propelled by the Philly soul crossover hit "Use ta Be My Girl." The album also featured the single "Cry Together," a sensual slow jam written by producers Gamble and Huff about the ups and downs of a relationship. Featuring lush orchestral instrumentation and The O'Jays trademark vocal harmonies, "Cry Together" failed to make the charts upon its release but eventually became one of the group's most beloved songs.
