"777-9311" is a song by The Time from their second album, What Time Is It?, after watching Idolmaker, a 1980 film about a rock promoter, Prince was inspired to develp music projects using his seemingly endless creativity. He assembled The Time from musicians from his hometown of Minneapolis. Prince produced, played, and programmed everything on "777-9311." The Time's lead vocalist Morris Day added his voice later. The song is a sexy funk track about trying to get someone's phone number. "Baby, what's your phone number? / I know I'm kinda fast, but I hate to waste time." The number used in the title was Prince guitarist Dez Dickerson's actual phone number. He changed it after receiving endless calls from fans of the song. Other popular songs built around phone numbers are "Beechwood 4-5789" by The Marvelettes and Tommy Tutone's "867-5309/Jenny."
The backing track for "777-9311" is available with background vocals or as an instrumental on Karaoke Version.
