"Monkey Man" has undergone several remakes over the years, from the raw energy of the Amy Winehouse live cover to its reincarnation by Japanese experimental noiseniks Melt-Banana. However, nothing will ever come close to the original. A high-water mark for reggae, "Monkey Man" was originally released in 1969 by Toots & the Maytals and made it to Number 47 on the UK singles chart, ushering in the arrival of the reggae troupe’s first proper debut album of the same name from 1971. Helmed by late reggae legend Toots Hibbert – who passed away on September 11, 2020 – Toots & The Maytals were true pioneers, whose 1968 single "Do the Reggay" kickstarted a long-lasting cultural phenomenon. They picked up a Grammy award for their album True Love in 2005 and it was for that album that the group re-recorded ”Monkey Man” with ska favorites No Doubt, bridging a generational and cultural gap with the faster, skanking new ska-punk version.
