The sweetness of her vocals almost masks the song's agnostic message. Andy Patridge found the inspiration for "Dear God" in a series of books of the same name, which he considered exploitative of children, and used skiffle as his sonic reference for the song, which included a rich, Gershwin-style string section. "Dear God" didn't make it onto the band's stuff-of-legends album Skylarking (1986), although it was later added by their label Geffen Records after it snowballed into a college radio hit. Following the song's surge in popularity, it became a magnet for controversy in the US on account of its anti-religious message, sparking enraged calls to radio stations and even a bomb threat.
