Eight-year-old Jasmine Veillette is the first voice you hear in this pastoral pop curio from new wave legends XTC, delivering her candid lines with great authority as she questions the very existence of God. The sweetness of her vocals almost masks the song's agnostic message. Andy Patridge found the inspiration for "Dear God" in a series of books of the same name, which he considered exploitative of children, and used skiffle as his sonic reference for the song, which included a rich, Gershwin-style string section. "Dear God" didn't make it onto the band's stuff-of-legends album Skylarking (1986), although it was later added by their label Geffen Records after it snowballed into a college radio hit. Following the song's surge in popularity, it became a magnet for controversy in the US on account of its anti-religious message, sparking enraged calls to radio stations and even a bomb threat.
