It’s hard to overstate the influence of Chuck Berry’s “Johnny B. Goode,” a song that kicked off a rock and roll revolution. One of the earliest hits for the genre, the song’s opening riff is also one of the most recognizable and iconic pieces of music of all time. With lyrics that are partly autobiographical, partly inspired by piano player Johnnie Johnson, the song was released as a single in 1958 and peaked at Number 8 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. The track was produced by Leonard and Phil Chess. “Johnny B. Goode” has been covered countless times over the course of rock music history, including an iconic scene in the 1985 film Back to the Future performed by actor Michael J. Fox. Chuck Berry performed the song, backed by Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, at the first induction ceremony at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986. He was among the first artists being inducted. The song was also inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999.
