Perhaps one of the most iconic and instantly recognizable songs in the history of rock'n'roll, "Blue Suede Shoes" was originally written by country artist Carl Perkins in 1955. According to Perkins, he got the inspiration for the song while performing at a dance where he saw a young man scolding his date for stepping on his suede shoes. Other sources claim that the song was about a black airman stationed with Johnny Cash in Germany and that it was Cash who gave Perkins the idea for "Blue Suede Shoes." Shortly after its release, the track spent two weeks at the Number 2 position on the Billboard Hot 100 and singlehandedly boosted Perkins' career, making him the first country artist to successfully cross over to the rhythm and blues and pop charts. However, the song's popularity would reach new heights after being covered by Elvis Presley, who included it in his groundbreaking eponymous studio debut in 1956. In the following years, "Blue Suede Shoes" became one of Elvis Presley's signature songs and was re-recorded for the soundtrack of the film G.I. Blues in 1960.
