Los Angeles-born rapper Too $hort began his career in the early eighties and by 1987 had been signed to Jive Records, who put out his 1988 LP Life Is...Too Short, which went double platinum and assured his success in the '90s. He kicked off the new millennium with a top 10 album in You Nasty, and continued to wheel out his brand of salacious gangster rap for another three albums that included 2003's Married to the Game. In 2006, he dropped his 16th LP for Jive Records, Blow the Whistle, and this is the first single and title track, which sees the West Coast rapper turn a sports metaphor into a hardcore rap song and rep his hometown of Oakland, where he grew up ("I come from East Oakland where the youngstas get hyphy."). According to Too $hort himself, a calculator was used to tot up his rapped hours: "I must have super powers / Rap 225 thousand hours / Get it calculated, do the math." "Blow the Whistle" became one of his biggest tunes, sampled by Drake in 2016 and Saweetie in 2020.
