Roberta Flack first heard “Killing Me Softly with His Song” on an airplane. The singer was listening to an in-flight audio program when the original version, sung by Lori Lieberman, came on. Flack was able to listen to the song several times while writing down the words and melody. When she landed, she called producer Quincy Jones and asked him to connect her with the writers. She rehearsed the song with her band but didn’t record it. In September of 1972, she was opening for Marvin Gaye. He asked her to do an oncore and she decided to try “Killing Me Softly with His Song.” The crowd went crazy. The singer quickly recorded the song for her album titled Killing Me Softly. The song won the 1973 Grammy Award for Record of the Year and Song of the Year.
