One of the first vocal groups to help pioneer the classic Philly soul sound, Blue Magic kicked their career into gear and set out their dreamy soul stall in 1973 with their debut single "Spell". Written and co-produced by head wizard and lead singer Ted Mills, the track—a slow, sensual ballad that would later come to define the Blue Magic aesthetic—charted at number 30 on the Billboard R&B Charts and was included on the band's self-titled debut album. Over heavenly guitar tones and twinkling strings, in his now iconic falsetto, Ted Mills sings about love and infatuation—the type that keeps you awake at night. It’s one of the highlights of an album that is held up as an integral document of a timeless movement, and which spawned one of Philly soul's most enduring classics, catapulting Blue Magic into the national music consciousness with understated heartstopper "Sideshow."
