From 1971's "You Are Everything" to 1974's "You Make Me Feel Brand New", Philly soul torchbearers The Stylistics scored a string of hits in the '70s during their fruitful partnership with producer Thom Bell and songwriter Linda Creed. The fragile, crystalline falsetto of Russell Thompkins Jr. and the pioneering production of Thom Bell proved a winning combination for their signature soul excursions, but in 1974 they ceased working with Thom Bell and joined forces with Van McCoy, pivoting to a more easy listening-type sound. Released in 1980, "Hurry Up This Way Again" was the title cut of their last LP to hit the US pop charts (charting at number 127 on the US Billboard 200) and also went to number 18 on the US R&B chart, seeing out the era of sweet, sweet soul in style. The song reached a new generation of music fans in 1996 when it was sampled by Jay-Z on "Politics As Usual," featured on his debut album Reasonable Doubt, and has also been covered by a number of artists over the years including Regina Belle and Patrice Rushen.
